Thieves take equipment from Muirlands MS
Principal Chris Hargrave of Muirlands Middle School informed parents and others in the community on Feb. 24 that the school had been broken into during the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 16.
When police responded to the security alarm, they reportedly found that multiple rooms and the library had been broken into.
Ten laptop computers, an LCD projector, walkie-talkies and approximately $80 in cash was taken, for a total value of about $80,000, Hargrave said.
Police could not immediately respond to the alarm because of other concerns, she said.
Detectives are investigating the incident, and additional security measures for the school are being discussed, the principal said.
Gas line replacement snarl Bird Rock traffic
Construction crews working on La Jolla Boulevard at Forward Avenue in Bird Rock realized a gas line was too shallow, causing more congestion for both residents and merchants in the area.
The 3-inch-deep gas line crews found should be the standard 30 inches deep, the Bird Rock Community Council wrote in a letter. So San Diego Gas & Electric workers must find the gas main associated with the line and relocate it.
Construction in Bird Rock has been an ongoing issue for both residents and merchants. The current project, which will add parking and roundabouts, was on hiatus during the holiday season but resumed shortly afterward. Now, the BRCC said work at this intersection has come to a halt.
There will be many traffic changes because of the new work crews.
Businesses in the French Pastry Café shopping center remain open and the old driveway on La Jolla Boulevard is open, BRCC said. The driveway is accessible from both the north and south. The old driveway on Forward Avenue is also open.
The contractor opened a new roundabout at Bird Rock Avenue to access the side of the center.
The west half of Camino de la Costa at La Jolla Boulevard is open while waiting for the gas line relocation, BRCC said.
Beginning Friday, Feb. 29, crews will reroute northbound traffic to La Jolla Hermosa between Bird Rock Avenue and La Canada. The city will monitor the traffic to ensure safety.
The gas line repair could take three to four weeks. While crews work on the gas lines, there will be no on-street parking on the east side of the 5700 block of La Jolla Boulevard.

Druck Foundation to host conference
The San Diego-based Jenna Druck Foundation is hosting its 11th annual “Young Women’s Spirit of Leadership Conference” on Saturday, March 1. The event will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Liberty Station in Point Loma.
More than 500 young women from area high schools have been invited to attend the event. It will feature keynote speeches from authors Audrey Brashich, a former model, and Courtney Macavinta, a coach for teenagers, plus an address by arts writer Charlene Baldridge.
Participants in the event will have the opportunity to choose from 15 workshops on various subjects. In addition, they will be able to participate in a mentor luncheon with about 200 women leaders from the San Diego area.
“That’s what makes it unique, the caliber of women that come together that carve out time in their calendar to give back,” program director Leanne Tibiatowski said.
For more information on the conference, including how to nominate a leader or volunteer at the event, call (619) 294-8000, or e-mail [email protected].
