Dianne York-Goldman, whose reputation as a successful woman ” she co-owns La Jolla Spa MD in La Jolla with her husband, one of San Diego’s most popular places to go for quick “pick-me-up” plastic surgeries and has her own line of mineral makeup ” doesn’t quite fit with her soft-spoken voice. But, this woman has channeled the suffering of those she has cared for to create a charity fashion show two years in a row.
This Saturday, Sept. 15, York-Goldman will host a fashion show at the Estancia Hotel in La Jolla, which she will dedicate to her sister who found out she had breast cancer. Proceeds from the event will go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation.
Isabell Kristensen, who was also the designer at York-Goldman’s show last year, which benefited ovarian cancer, has designed gowns for stars including Nicole Kidman and Ivana Trump. Based in Monaco, Kristensen is using 16 models and two assistants.
“Isabell is a perfectionist,” York-Goldman said. “I don’t have a doubt the show will come off flawlessly.”
Last year, Fashion for the Cure was dedicated to Stephanie Strauss, who came in to work at Spa MD one day feeling ill, was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer, then died a few weeks after attending and speaking at the fashion show that was dedicated to her, said Laura Farmer with the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
“Ovarian cancer is known as the ‘silent killer,'” York-Goldman said. “This year, I looked at Isabell … after my sister was diagnosed (with breast cancer). Let’s do something for the Susan G. Koman Foundation, I said.”
Kristensen and York-Goldman decided to dedicate this year’s Fashion for the Cure to breast cancer.
“We feel really good about what we’re doing here,” York-Goldman said. “Two thousand women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in San Diego this year; 180,000 will be diagnosed throughout the country. Forty thousand will die in the year.”
They plan to give all the proceeds to the Komen Foundation. Three-quarters will stay in the San Diego area for women who can’t afford costs associated with the disease, while the rest will go to research.
The show will kick off with a red carpet opening around 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, with pink champagne to begin pre-party festivities. The black-tie event really means “pink-tie,” as guests are asked to wear as much pink as they can to symbolize the Komen Foundation. Around 8 p.m., guests will eat either a vegetarian or Chateau Brignon dinner.
On Sunday, La Jolla Spa MD will be hosting a trunk show, beginning at 1 p.m., during which visitors can try on Kristensen’s designs and meet her while enjoying tea, scones and pink champagne.
At this year’s fashion show, Kristensen will feature not only her well-known haute couture gowns, but also swimsuits and other styles, all in different shades of pink.
Tickets are $250 for the event or $150 for the show. For more information, call (858) 459-6868. The Estancia Hotel is located at 9700 N. Torrey Pines Road.
