Three arrested in attempted home robbery Three men attempted to rob a home in the 6800 block of Condon Street in University City on Nov. 29 at 5 p.m. When the men rang the doorbell, the woman in the house went to look through the peephole but did not answer the door, according to police reports. She reportedly heard one of the men say, “Let’s go through the backdoor.” The woman hid in the bathroom and called 911. Two of the suspects who were leaving the house when police arrived attempted to run. One of the men escaped over a fence into the canyon but was later apprehended on a nearby street. The third suspect hid in the home’s attic and allegedly refused to surrender until police sent in a canine, which bit the suspect, according to Allen Alvarez, spokesman for the San Diego Police Department’s Northern Division. The suspects apparently had stolen $1,000. Alvarez called the robbery “random.”   Sammy’s holds toy drive Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza is preparing to fire up its annual children’s toy drive for kids and adolescents at the San Diego Center for Children, many of whom will remain in residential care at the center through the holidays. This year’s toy drive takes place from Tuesday, Dec. 8 until Sunday, Dec. 13. San Diegans are encouraged to drop off new, unwrapped toys or games for children ages 6 to 18. Among the Sammy’s locations accepting drop-offs are the Costa Verde Sammy’s in University City, 8650 Genesee Ave. (858-404-9898) and the restaurant at 702 Pearl St. (858-456-5222). Coastwise aids students Coastwise Capital Group is offering college scholarships ranging from $2,500 to $1,000 to a total of six seniors, juniors and sophomores that attend La Jolla High, The Bishop’s School, La Jolla Country Day, Southern California Yeshiva High and The Preuss School at UCSD. Recipients will be required to invest the money in a college savings plan with Coastwise until they leave for college.  Based in La Jolla, Coastwise Capital Group aims to promote financial management literacy and education through the scholarships that amount to $10,000. The scholarship application, which includes a 1,000-word essay, is due Jan. 15, 2010. Visit www.coastwiseprize.com for guidelines.   ‘Off Beaten Path’ exhibit addresses violence The University Art Gallery at UCSD has brought together 21 artists from 19 countries to explore violence against women in an exhibition that strives to avoid tabloid sensationalism in its depiction of the crisis and help educate the viewer about the problem’s roots. The artists were asked “to help us create new representations through their artworks and, in doing so, help us feel and understand the essence of the problem of violence against women,” curator Randy Jayne Rosenberg said of the exhibition called “Off the Beaten Path: Violence, Women and Art.” The exhibition runs through Dec. 12 at the University Art Gallery, located at the west end of Mandeville Center at UCSD, 9500 Gilman Drive. The gallery is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free. For more information call (858) 534-2107.
