Employers need to confirm workers’ legal status
A difference between the immigrants I grew up with in Pittsburgh is that the steel mills hired “legal” immigrants, while CA employers think that is not a responsibility of theirs (Immigration raid nets 18 at North PB restaurant).
It seems to them that is the Border Patrol’s responsibility! Duh!

PB needs more police, not residents, to police
Hooray for Tyler Smith for his surrogate police duties! (“Gotcha! PB mans nabs burglary suspect on the run,” Beach & Bay Press, May 22). Shame on the Beach & Bay Press for glamorizing it.
What we need in Pacific Beach is an even greater police presence to function both a deterrent and enforcement. Only then will the riff-raff that flocks to Pacific Beach wander elsewhere ” not that our friendly La Jolla neighbors welcome increased patrols in PB.
Let’s hope your next article doesn’t feature our grief for our good Samaritan after he was shot by the criminal he was chasing.

Volunteers helped MBHS golf team succeed
On May 1 you published my article about the Mission Bay High School Golf Team, which I very much appreciated. However, in thanking the many Pacific Beach community members for supporting our efforts to keep the golf program alive at MBHS, I omitted two of the most critical benefactors we have ” the Mission Bay Golf Club, under the direction of Walt Willows and PGA pro, Bill Westerlund.
For many year’s, Walt and the Mission Bay Golf Club have partnered with MBHS by providing our golf teams with driving range hitting time and convenient tee times throughout the CIF golf season. High school golf teams representing all of San Diego County would have a tough time improving if it were not for the golfing community making facilities available for practice.
Thanks must also go out to Walt’s staff for occasionally taking the time to help my players. They’ve offered our team everything from recalling local golf history, to tips for improving their games, to congratulations after matches played well or encouragement when the wheels fell off.
Lastly, belated thanks to local PGA teaching pro, Bill Westerlund. As many of your readers know, Bill can be found daily at his Mission Bay Golf Club teaching station patiently providing his keys to a successful golf swing. Bill has always made his time available to helping the MBHS golf program. Under his watchful eye, his videotaped lessons and his technique appraisal, the MBHS golf team took great steps forward this year ” I think I learned as much about golf from watching and listening to Bill teach my players as they did. Bill has given me a wealth of knowledge over the years and I thank him for that.
So there you have it. Sorry for the omissions. My bad.
Go Bucs!
