Officer-involved shooting in PB — San Diego police homicide detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting during which an officer shot a suspect allegedly advancing on him with a metal object who failed to comply with an order to stop.
San Diego police Lt. Jorge Duran said the incident occurred Sept. 21 about 3:43 p.m. in the 1000 block of Garnet Avenue.
Duran said a patrol officer was flagged down by two citizens who reported they saw one man chasing another man with what appeared to be a knife.
“The witnesses pointed to a man walking westbound in the 1100 block of Garnet Avenue,” Duran said. “The witnesses identified the man as the suspect with the knife.”
The officer requested assistance and observed the suspect walking in his direction, Duran said.
“The suspect made eye contact with the officer and immediately reached into his clothing and pulled out a silver metal object,” Duran said. “The officer ordered the suspect to drop the object and get on the ground. The suspect did not comply and instead advanced toward the officer with the object in his hand. Fearing he was about to be stabbed, the officer fired one round from his duty weapon striking the suspect.”
Duran said the suspect fell to the ground and dropped a pair of silver scissors. He said the suspect was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
The officer involved in the shooting is a six-year police veteran. — Dave Schwab Assault with deadly weapon in transient encampment — A man is being sought in connection with a stabbing near a transient encampment on Sept. 21 in Pacific Beach.
The incident occurred about 5:26 a.m. when two men were walking together in the south alley of 1000 Garnet Ave., San Diego police officer Frank Cali said.
“The men were arguing and one of them pulled out some tool and stabbed the other in the left arm,” Cali said. “The suspect then fled the scene westbound through the alley on a red bike.”
Cali said the stabbing victim was uncooperative with police before he was transported to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening injury.
Police described the at-large suspect as a Caucasian male in his 30s, 5 feet 11 inches tall. He was wearing a blue flannel shirt and dark pants.
Northern Division is investigating. — Dave Schwab Suspicous package found to be harmless — Garnet Avenue between Dawes and Bayard streets in Pacific Beach was closed early Sept. 20 while police investigated a report of a suspicious object resembling a pipe bomb that turned out to be harmless.
Officers were alerted to the object by a transient, who spotted the object near the Chase Bank branch office at 1000 Garnet Ave. shortly after 5 a.m., according to San Diego police Lt. Kevin Mayer.
At around 7:30 a.m., the object was determined to be harmless and the roadway was reopened, Mayer said. He described the object as a black PVC pipe filled with sand and having a metal handle on top. — Dave Schwab
