Local scholastic baseball teams took to the diamond last week for tournament action.
The La Jolla High Vikings went 2-1 in the Lions Tournament to improve their record to 9-5.
The Vikings began the week by dropping a 3-1 contest to Del Oro High School from Loomis, Calif. La Jolla wasted a solid pitching performance by Billy Bright. Offensively, the Vikings were shut down as they managed only three hits for the entire game and had three base runners picked off.
La Jolla bounced back the next day with a 16-1 drubbing of Imperial High School. Sophomore Wyatt Hoff earned the victory as he pitched four scoreless innings in his varsity debut. Hoff was also a major contributor at the plate where he went 2-for-4 with five RBIs. David Harpster went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
The Vikings concluded the tournament by avenging an earlier defeat to Kearny, topping the Komets 12-7.
Alex Abbott earned the win for La Jolla. La Jolla had a balanced attack at the plate as it collected 10 hits and seven stolen bases. Blake Shelburne went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs to pace the team. La Jolla just missed advancing to the semifinals when it lost out on a tiebreaker to Del Oro.
“Our guys have done a very nice job so far this season,” La Jolla head coach Gary Frank noted. “We’ve put ourselves in an excellent position to compete for a playoff berth. If we continue to pitch and play defense as well as we have, then we’re going to turn some heads in the Western League.”
La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School also played in the Lions Tournament and opened action with a 6-1 win over Johnstown (Pa.) on a strong performance by Zack Kusnir, now 3-0 this year.
Kusnir pitched six innings and gave up four hits with eight strikeouts. Sophomore catcher Mike McKenna went 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs.
LJCD then lost 8-5 to pool winner Enterprise (Calif.). Tied 5-5 in the sixth, Enterprise scored once and added two more runs in the seventh to win it.
In its final game of the week, LJCD beat Crawford 17-1 on 17 hits and a six inning four-hitter by sophomore Greg Wisenberg, who improved to 4-1 on the year. Wisenberg also went 3-for-4 with a triple, a home run, three runs and four RBIs.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights won four of five tournament games on the week.
Included in those contests for Bishop’s (8-4) was a 4-3 win over Horizon, as Patrick Swan pitched a complete game. Colin Walsh went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs.
In an 8-6 win over Point Loma, Tommy Wornham pitched a solid six and one-third innings. Walsh homered and Spencer Beers-Mulroy was 2-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBIs.
Bishop’s also scored wins over Harbor (Santa Cruz) 11-7 and Christian (7-3), while dropping an 8-4 decision to San Pasqual.
