Neighborhood rivals squared off in the swimming pool last week as La Jolla High and The Bishop’s School met each other.
La Jolla’s boys and girls swim team had a strong showing against Bishop’s in the meet at the Coggan Family Aquatic Complex, setting individual top time records along the way. The La Jolla boys won 133-46, while the Bishop’s girls scored a 101-78 victory, with many swimmers setting personal bests.
“Our girls team faced a much improved Bishop’s swim team this past week, and for the first time in at least 10 years, the Bishop’s girls won,” said Tom Atwell, La Jolla High School swim team coach. “The La Jolla girls put up a heck of a fight, but the depth of the Bishop’s team proved to be too much. On the boys side, it was an entirely different story. Our boys swam a great meet from top to bottom and dominated virtually every event. The only event the La Jolla boys did not win was the medley relay.”
In the boys 50-yard freestyle, La Jolla’s Tyler Woods (junior) set an individual top time of 22:35. Teammate Miko Vespremi (junior) swam the boys 100 freestyle in 50:03 and Troy LeLoup swam it in 51:50. La Jolla’s Eric Hedlin (freshman) set a personal best in both the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, swimming 1:50.76 and 4:46.72, respectively.
In the boys 50-yard breast stroke, La Jolla’s Alex Grinius (sophomore) covered the course in 34:61, followed by Andrew Steinmetz (sophomore) in 35:30 and Dai-Evi Kim (freshman) at 37:63.
La Jolla’s Roberto Guerrero (junior) swam a 1:09:50 in the 100-yard breaststroke. In the boys 50-yard butterfly, teammate Christian Serrano (sophomore) swam a 31:89. Tyler Woods (junior), who swam the 100-yard butterfly event for the first time, came in at 57:37 for the Vikings.
In the girls race, Bishop’s was led by Sam Allen’s 200 IM time of 2:15.98, Noel Elgamal’s 100 fly time of 1:01.10, Dominique Sardo in the 50 free (25.95) and 100 free (56.46), and Andrea Basaraba’s 100 backstroke time of 1:02.92.
In the girls 50-yard free, La Jolla’s Havyne Cooper (junior) set an individual top time of 26:70. Teammate Kate Woods (sophomore) set a personal best of 27:03 and Megan Moreland (freshman) 27.81. For the girls 200 freestyle, La Jolla’s Jackie Walters (junior) set an individual top time of 2:12.52, with Moreland placing in 2:12.64. Walters also set a personal best in the girls 500 freestyle with a time of 5:49.62. La Jolla’s Sara Ashcroft (freshman) set a personal best in the girls 100 backstroke, 1:13.97.
In the girls 100-yard breast stroke, La Jolla’s Samantha McLaughlin (junior) swam 1:12.46, while teammate Denise Burciaga (freshman) set a personal best in the 50 yard butterfly at 34:24. La Jolla’s Alexandra Boss (freshman) swam a 1:19.76 in the girls 100 individual medley.
In action yesterday (April 23), La Jolla was slated to meet Patrick Henry, while Bishop’s was facing Scripps Ranch.
