Mixed results proved the case last weekend for local scholastic football teams.
La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School (3-1, one forfeit; 1-0) got back on track with a 56-0 thrashing of Midway Baptist.
According to LJCD head coach Jeff Hutzler, the Torreys showed tremendous improvement over last week’s disappointing loss at Army Navy in the areas of effort, enthusiasm, love for the game, hustle and determination.
“The Army Navy loss was a tough lesson learned and the team has dedicated itself to three goals for the remainder of the season: love the game, love your teammates, play hard on every down,” Hutzler said. “If those three goals can be met during every practice and every game for the rest of this season, the wins will take care of themselves.”
Against Midway, quarterback Matt Mulligan was on fire, hitting 13 of 15 passes for 240 yards, no interceptions and three touchdowns. Tight end Mark Schu had five receptions for 71 yards and two TDs. Collin Tuck led all Torrey rushers with 64 yards and two TDs on nine carries.
Defensive end Jon Hansbrough had an outstanding night, racking up 10 tackles (five solos) and recovering a fumble. Defensive tackle Alex Ferre blocked a Patriot punt, which linebacker Mark Hannum scooped up and returned for a 10-yard TD.
The Torreys play their second league game this Friday at home versus Venture Christian at 7 p.m.
LJCD’s junior varsity team improved to 4-0 with a 41-6 win over Midway Baptist.
The Bishop’s School had its defense to keep the Knights in the game, but a lack of offense had the hosts staring at a 3-0 loss to St. Margaret’s last Saturday.
The visitors have a 17-game winning streak and are currently ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section.
“Our defense played an amazing game,” Bishop’s head coach Mike David noted. “We just fell a little bit short. I’m very proud of our effort.”
Michael Strauss and Chase Jensen had 14 tackles and Zach Franz had nine to lead Bishop’s defensively.
The Knights got the ball on their own 20 with two minutes left and drove all the way to the St. Margaret’s 20 but couldn’t get on the board.
At La Jolla High Friday evening, the Vikings saw Point Loma come to town and walk away with a 21-10 victory (see related story and photos on page 17).
“No coach likes to lose, but I was greatly encouraged by our play on both sides of the ball,” La Jolla head coach Dave Ponsford said. “I feel that we improved on both sides of the ball and stepped up and played a highly regarded team close. I am proud of the progress that we made, but we need to keep moving towards improvement this week.”
La Jolla will be home this Friday evening for a 7 p.m. contest with Brawley High.
