Several local scholastic baseball teams hit the diamond last week as the league campaign winds down.
At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, the Torreys dropped a 6-1 decision to Horizon.
“We just did not mount much offense that day,” LJCD head coach John Edman noted. “Their pitcher, Chris Ramirez, threw a great game.”
LJCD (15-12, 5-2) lost a 10-9 heartbreaker to Montgomery on Saturday, after taking a 4-1 lead early on.
Down 10-8 late in the game, the Torreys got a home run from Greg Wisenberg to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning, but could not manage another base runner.
Wisenberg went 4-for-5 at the plate with a home run and double, while Tommy Morris added a run-scoring double for LJCD.
LJCD was to meet Canyon Crest Academy on Wednesday, May 14, with a win guaranteeing at least a share of the Coastal League South crown.
“We have had a great year; most of our losses are to schools in higher divisions, much larger than ours,” Edman added. “We are looking forward to an exciting playoff season.”
At La Jolla High, the Vikings under head coach Gary Frank split games with Cathedral Catholic last week.
La Jolla dropped the first contest by a 6-0 score, with Stephen Foster getting the only hit for the Vikings.
Patrick Christensen took the loss, despite five strong innings in which he allowed only two runs.
In their other contest with the Dons, the Vikings scored a 2-1 victory.
Down 1-0, La Jolla answered in the fourth inning as Peter Sefton and Wyatt Hoff got on base with singles.
Austin Miller followed with a single to right field to tie the game at 1-1. Foster gave La Jolla (17-8-1, 6-4) the lead when he lined a shot to left field to score Hoff with a sacrifice fly.
Hoff got the win on the mound, going the distance for his fifth victory of the season. Robbie Beathard made a game-saving catch in the sixth inning and Dustin Ouellette made several defensive stops at third base to help secure the victory.
“This was a huge win for us,” Frank remarked. “As we approach the playoffs, it is important for our guys to know that we can beat a very good team like Cathedral. The talent has been there all season, but now our guys are starting to believe in themselves and their abilities. We’re executing much better than we were earlier in the season.”
La Jolla High was to finish regular season action on Wednesday, May 14 versus University City High.
Finally, The Bishop’s School was looking to get back on the winning track in its regular season finale on Wednesday, May 14.
Bishop’s (11-8, 3-4) went into that contest riding a four-game losing streak, including a 5-2 loss to Canyon Crest Academy last Saturday.
