A number of local college athletes turned in strong seasons at their respective schools this spring.
Roxy Lambert (La Jolla High) finished her sophomore year at the University of Redlands, where her softball team won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) championship for the third year in a row.
Lambert hit .350 in league play with two grand slams and a slugging percentage of .575 on the season. She capped off the ’07 season with a home run in the NCAA Regionals in Louisiana recently, where her Bulldogs made it to the “Sweet 16” nationwide. Redlands fell in the championship game of the regional tournament to top-ranked Linfield College.
Christina Sloyer (La Jolla High) was a junior pole vaulter for the University of California, San Diego women’s track team this spring.
UCSD competed recently in the 2007 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Charlotte.
Also at UCSD, men’s tennis player Eric Rubens (La Jolla High) was named the Player to Watch from the West Region.
Seeing time at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the singles ladder, Rubens recorded a 14-10 mark. Playing alongside Blake Meister at the No. 1 doubles spot, Rubens and his partner went 19-4, resulting in the duo’s No. 5 National Ranking in doubles play.
Brandon Davis (The Bishop’s School) concluded his senior year at catcher for the Georgetown University baseball team. Georgetown finished at 21-34, 8-19 in Big East play.
Davis finished the season with a .236 batting average, with 39 hits, six home runs and 31 RBIs.
Lisa Dodd (University City High) and the UCLA women’s softball team ended their campaign at 37-18. UCLA saw its 2007 season come to a close with a 4-2 loss to Loyola Marymount in the Los Angeles regional of the NCAA tournament.
Dodd went 2-1 on the mound this season and compiled stellar numbers at the plate. She finished with a .369 batting average, with 59 hits, 14 home runs and 49 RBIs.
Brittany Rowe (University City High) and the UCLA women’s water polo team secured the NCAA championship once again earlier this month.
UCLA captured its third consecutive women’s water polo crown with a 5-4 victory over Stanford. The Bruins finished the season at 28-2 and have now compiled a 90-6 record over the last three seasons.
Koree Blyleven (The Bishop’s School) was a sophomore member of the Stanford University women’s water polo team.
With its loss to UCLA, Stanford finished the season at 27-3. Stanford won 23 games in a row during the season, including a pair over UCLA.
” Editor’s note: If you know of a Bishop’s School, La Jolla Country Day School, La Jolla High or University City High grad who will be playing collegiate sports this fall, please send information to [email protected].
