Hitting the pools for their final league meets of the season, local scholastic swim teams are in the hunt for league honors.At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, both the boys and girls swam to victory last week over Clairemont.The girls team dominated the meet, winning all 12 individual events en route to a 109-61 win. Dual event winners included Melanie Kaplan in the 200 IM and 500 free, Melissa Berkay in the 200 free and 100 back, and Chelsea Burns in the 50 free and 100 free.The boys team also scored a convincing win, rolling 101-63. Chris Vorlicek won the 200 free and 500 free, complemented by Ronny Clausner’s victory in the 100 free and Kai Altree’s first-place finish in the 200 IM.In another meet against Mira Mesa, the Lady Torreys scored a 103-61 win, with the boys losing 101-69.LJCD had its last dual meet Wednesday, May 3 vs. Saint Augustine/OLP, with City Conference championships coming the following week. At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights entered action this week at 3-3, while the boys were 1-5.Some key swimmers of late for the girls include Noel and Ellie Elgamal, Lauren Sabb, Dominique Sardo and Ariell Heacox. The boys have been paced by Kenan Aker, Connor Levoff, Scott Seagal, Kevin May and Gaelan Hoover.”The season is going great,” Bishop’s head swim coach Chad Bishop remarked. “Our girls medley relay has yet to lose a race, and we’re excited to see how they perform at City finals and in CIF. Individual swimmers such as sisters Ellie and Noel Elgamal have also not yet lost in certain events, despite swimming them every meet.”In fact, our team losses have come from the very large schools with lots of swimmers, and we’ve had some exemplary individual performances over the course of the year. We’ve also been excited to see the development of younger swimmers such as freshmen Dominique Sardo and Scott Seagal.”At La Jolla High School, the Vikings have only one loss between the boys and girls teams.The girls’ only dual meet loss this season was to Cathedral. Junior Gloria Benefield continues to dominate in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly.Junior Nicki Horner has been strong in the 200 IM and 100 breast, while junior Keller Felt has been very fast in the 100 and 50 freestyle as well as the 200 freestyle. Sophomore Kelly Wahl has also been in the hunt in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The boys entered action this week undefeated, and with a win against Patrick Henry, they could lock up a league championship. Senior diver Adam Minch has been excellent on the board. Senior Sam Busby remains undefeated in league in the 200 freestyle and the 200 IM, while senior Daniel Orloff is undefeated in league in the 50 free and 100 free.
