I have been in contact with a police officer at the location of Del Mar Avenue and Canon Street. He informed me this afternoon that, beginning next week, drivers turning from Canon Street onto Del Mar Avenue will be subject to “expensive tickets” [for violations between] 3:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. That means that any ordinary citizen who wants to go to Stump’s, the middle school, Point Loma High School, the library, assorted doctors, stores, et cetera … well, we can just take a flying leap.
I’m disappointed that no one has complained or followed through on this action. It will cause a lot of inconvenience for the rest of the residents of the Point. I know they are trying to punish the civilians that work on the Navy base, but I think for the sake of a few houses, they are asking the legitimate citizens of the Point to stay away.
No way! My family has paid taxes on these streets for 60-plus years. Del Mar Avenue didn’t exist. Anyone who buys a home that connects with Canon on one end and Chatsworth Boulevard on the other … well, what can I say? Did you not see the busy streets?
I have noticed in their effort (if you want to call it that) that they have employed some means to reduce the speed of traffic. That makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is they have never tried a speed bump or two. I would gladly add some time to my trips and ease over one or two bumps every trip. I don’t know why they haven’t tried this method. It has worked on many streets …. what’s their excuse?
I called District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer’s office this afternoon and spoke with Matt Aubrey, who is going to speak with someone in the Traffic/Engineering Department and see what they can do about a speed bump. I reminded him that the base civilians are cagey drivers and they will use Point Loma Boulevard and, then, some other unsuspecting street will get it. And so it goes … it’s the nature of the beast.
Another question: Have these people tried working with the Navy base? And speed bump(s) … when they’ve tried that, then I will say they’ve truly tried everything.
I know the Navy base civilians have overrun this Point. I’m tired of them running wild on many of our streets, and I can sympathize with Del Mar Avenue residents from that angle. But closing off a main connecting street to Chatsworth, et cetera, isn’t the answer. I wonder if it’s even legal.
