La Jolla sluggers make hit at alumni game
Alums representing five decades of La Jolla High baseball were the victims of an offensive onslaught as the 2008 La Jolla High varsity team pounded out 19 hits en route to a 16-4 victory in the 15th annual alumni baseball game held last weekend.
Eleven different varsity players had hits and drove in at least one run. Seniors Jimmy Filter (two hits, three RBIs) and Zach Tonks (two hits, two RBIs) led the way for the Vikings.
The alumni team was held to four runs and eight hits, including extra base hits by Ryan Martin (’01) and Paul Misleh (’01). Kyle Martin (’01), and Jeff Ponsford (’01) made several outstanding defensive plays. Jack Boyl (’01), Danny Fitzgerald (’98), Robert Sprong (’07) and Michael Gold (’02) all pitched effectively for the alums.
La Jolla High head coach Gary Frank was pleased with his team’s effort.
“We did a great job of swinging the bat against some tough pitchers today,” Frank remarked. “We also played solid defense, and our pitchers threw well all game long. Today was a great way to honor the tradition of history of La Jolla High baseball and also to kick off our 2008 season. We’ve got a very talented team, and we should be in the hunt for our second consecutive Western League title.”
La Jolla opens up the regular season this Saturday at Coronado in a 1:30 p.m. contest.

La Jolla High JV cagers finish season
The La Jolla High junior varsity girls basketball team finished its season with a record of 8-13 overall and 4-8 in Western League play after dropping their final two games recently.
The Lady Vikings fell to Mira Mesa 46-27 in a non-league game. Onezia Berotte had eight points and Robin Mackelburg had seven points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
La Jolla then wrapped up its season by losing to OLP 25-16. Lilly Sedaghat led La Jolla with six points.
“People may look at our won-loss record and think that this team wasn’t successful, but that couldn’t be further from the truth,” La Jolla High head coach Gary Frank said. “Each and every one of the girls on our team has improved tremendously over the past three months. I am very proud of this team and everything they’ve been able to accomplish in a very short time. At the end of the season, we were probably one of the most improved JV teams in the county, and at this level, that’s more important than winning or losing.”
