The local scholastic golf season wrapped up recently for several local teams in their respective leagues. At La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School, head coach Bill Cahoone and the Torreys finished up the regular season campaign with a record of 7-12, going 4-4 (third place) in the Coastal South League. The young Torreys started four freshmen the entire year, while senior Peter Blanchard was the only starter with previous varsity experience. Freshman Chris Tuulik had a great season, finishing as a match medalist in 10 matches this season, with a stroke average of 38.3 per nine holes over the course of the campaign. Freshmen Alejandro Amescua, Forrest Kim and Max Totten improved greatly during the course of the season, and freshman Chris Kang, sophomore Danny Levine and senior Trevor Coe also contributed, according to Cahoone. Today, May 14, LJCD plays in the Coastal South League Tournament at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, which helps determine all-league selections. First-round CIF team and individual play commences Wednesday, May 20 at Warner Springs Resort with Tuulik as the team’s only qualifier. “The team showed steady improvement over the course of the season, and we look forward to continued growth as we head into next year’s season,” Cahoone noted. At La Jolla High School, head coach Allen Merryman’s squad finished 9-7 overall and 4-6 in Western League action. “We finished the season very well, posting some surprising low team scores,” Merryman said. Despite not having a better record, Merryman said there were some highlights on the season. “Some of our players developed, including Brian John and Brian Boermeester,” Merryman continued. “Ikaika Velasco finishing first at City Conference and Dylan Jackson coming in fifth helped get our team inspired. Kevin Mulvihill, Austin Vincent and Nick Johnson finished out their seasons with some low rounds to help our team.” La Jolla’s lowest team score was a 183 at Balboa, which is a team three over par. At City Conference at Balboa all of La Jolla’s top six made it to the top 32 for match play, including Velasco (75-70), Jackson (75-72), Johnson (81-75), Vincent (82-76), Mulvihill (81-77) and Boermeester (81-77). In a Junior World qualifier last weeked at Balboa, Vincent shot 77-82 to go, Johnson shot 77-77 and Velasco shot 83-81. Finally, The Bishop’s School under head coach Billy Subang ended its regular season with a mark of 3-12. While Subang said there were no outstanding performances, there was consistent play by all who participated in matches this season. Seniors on the team were Pieter Stougaard, Spencer Bisbas and Steven Schoelen.
