Autumn brings the kids heading back to school, the San Diego Chargers returning to the gridiron and the Pacific Beach community honoring emergency personnel. The 27th annual Police and Emergency Services Appreciation Night (PAESAN), “Red, White and Blue: Celebrating Our Community Heroes,” will be held from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at the North Crown Point Shores Rotary Pavilion, near Lamont Street and Crown Point Drive.
Approximately 100 police, firefighters and lifeguards are expected to attend.
“We’re really looking forward to honoring them in person,” said event chairperson and Pacific Beach Town Council President Ruby Houck. “In times of trouble and tragedy, you don’t get to personally thank each and every one of the people who help you through it,” Houck said. “Here’s a chance to pat your community heroes on the back and say thank you.”
Chief of Police William Lansdowne, Fire Chief Tracy Jarman and Lifeguard Chief Ken Hewitt will be on hand, as will Councilman Kevin Faulconer.
Members of the San Diego Police Department, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department and San Diego Lifeguard Service who were singled out by their peers will receive framed historical photographs of Pacific Beach for their exceptional service to the beach community.
Though emergency personnel are the focus of the evening, PAESAN is also an opportunity for families and neighbors to come together.
“It’s a time to come out and meet your neighbors and have some food in a fun atmosphere,” Houck said.
For $5, attendees can enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs and salads provided by the Old Mission Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) as well as Cricket Moore’s famous gourmet cookies.
“Come on down with your kids, your family, and your blanket and enjoy the beauty of where we live,” Houck said.
For the kids, there will be interactive games, face painting, a bubble machine, snacks and treats.
“It’s fun for all, young and old,” Houck said.
A raffle featuring gift certificates for area restaurants, clothing shops and other local merchandise and attractions also will be held.
The Pacific Beach Town Council (PBTC) is still in need merchandise and monetary donations for the community event. For more information, call the PBTC offices at (858) 483-6666.
The PBTC is sponsoring the event with help from Discover Pacific Beach and the Pacific Beach Lions Club.
“It’s the one time of year when all our community groups work together,” Houck said. “All the community groups get involved.”
Tickets can be purchased at the event or at the PBTC offices, 1706 Garnet Ave.
