Crystal Pier Kids Classic”¦”If you teach your kid to fish, you won’t have to fish for your kid!” So declared Captain Ron Baker, relating a caller’s pronouncement on Captain Ron’s Fish Talk Radio show.
Longtime fishing captain and advocate for fishing causes, he created the new youth fishing derby: a free, day-long event on Crystal Pier, Saturday, Aug. 16.
Kids up to age 15 can register that morning at 8:30 a.m. to receive a free fishing rod. (Those 16 and over require a license to fish; younger ones do not.) They’ll also receive a free lunch and free raffle prizes. The pier will be closed to the public for that day.
Captain Ron received a grant from the Fish and Wildlife Advisory Commission to begin his project. Since then, a host of sponsors have joined him, including dozens of sportsfishing businesses. A catch-and-release contest will be sponsored by the S.D. Rod and Reel Club, while 500 fishing rods were generously donated by the Lakeside Optimists. The PB Town Council and the PB Community Foundation are also assisting.
“We’re expecting CBS News down there to film the event,” said Captain Ron, “and they’ll show it later all over the United States.” That’s the kind of publicity ” and the kind of event ” we need in PB. (Last year’s Labor Day brawl was an unfortunate claim to TV fame.)
Bring your kids or grandkids, your neighbor’s youngster and spread the news. For additional details or donations, see takekidsfishing.net.
“Surf’s Up” at Kate Sessions Park”¦No, it’s not a super tsunami. PB’s first Moonlight Movie in the Park will glow after dark on Saturday, Aug. 23.
“There are only five parks in San Diego that Time Warner selects to show these free movies,” said PB Town Council president Ruby Houck. “We’ve been trying to get them up here for almost two years! When we finally did, they looked around at the view and went ‘Wow!'” she exclaimed.
Time Warner won’t be sorry. Their movie will follow PB Rec Center’s festivities at 5 p.m., which includes carnival games, astro-jumps and free arts and crafts, along with cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn.
“Surf’s Up” is the featured movie, starring animated penguins riding the big waves. Just bring your blanket and sand chairs and enjoy another summer special.
“Rockola” Time!…concludes the PB Town Council’s Concert series this Sunday, Aug. 10, from 4 to 6:30 p.m., with great dance music at Kate Sessions Park.
