La Jolla stickers turning it around; Bishop’s 3-1
What a difference a season makes.
After struggling to win a game last year, the La Jolla High field hockey team has gotten off to a 5-1 start this season for second-year head coach Kristy Wolfmayer.
Some of the key players to date have included Claire Mittermiller, Sandra Harpster, Jenny Russell, Lauren Steinmetz and Kaitline Sharpe. Entering this week, Mittermiller has eight goals this season and Harpster has tallied nine.
“We have improved a great deal this season,” Wolfmayer commented. “The kids are excited that all their hard work is finally paying off. We have been working on bringing our game to the next level.”
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights came into action this week at 3-1 for head coach Kristin Davidson.
Key players to date include Erin Ryan, Winnie Eastwood, Daryl Griglak, Riley Sexton, Lia Sagerman and Sarah Shults.
“Our team has worked really hard on developing strong short corners,” Davidson commented. “So far, only one of our goals that we scored was not from short corners, so we have a great start to the season. Our more seasoned players are coming through for us and we are also delighted to see our sophomores rising to the occasion as well ” playing very well for such little varsity experience.”

LJCD spikers drop pair
The La Jolla Country Day School girls volleyball team had a tough go of it last week with two very strong opponents.
The Lady Torreys dropped a pair of 3-0 matches to San Dieguito Academy and The Bishop’s School, respectively.
LJCD will play in the Scripps Tournament this weekend.

La Jolla High girls stride to victory
The La Jolla High girls cross country team raced to victory recently in the Mustang Invitational.
La Jolla finished first with 23 points, followed by Our Lady of Peace with 52.
Top performances for the Lady Vikings came from Nihal Kayali (third, 13:16), Margot Hedlin (fourth 13:23), Tess Plant-Thomas (sixth, 13:27), Courtney Avvampato (seventh, 13:30), Maya Gamble (eighth, 13:34), Meagan Bautista (11th, 13:46) and Lily Howard (13th, 13:50).
“Not only was the win impressive, but the time gap between first and fifth was super,” La Jolla High Head Coach Roger Karnopp noted. “This was done with only one hard workout. The key now is to stay healthy and uninjured. The girls are responding very well.”
