Dear Representative Davis,
Do not give any more money to [President] Bush for his war of choice.
Bush lied to start the war in Iraq. There were no weapons of mass destruction and the administration knew it. There were no Iraqi ties to al-Qaeda and the administration knew it. These were bald-face lies to support an invasion of Iraq. The real reasons for the war? We will never really know the true reasons.
Bush wanted to avenge his daddy. Cheney wanted to make his ex-company, Halliburton, filthy rich. The neoconservatives wanted to expand American influence into the oil-rich Middle East. Whatever the real reasons, they certainly weren’t the professed reasons of weapons of mass destruction or Iraqi ties to al-Qaeda. It is amazing and alarming that Bush and his cronies have not been charged with war crimes. According to the precedents we helped set after Word War II, starting a war of choice is considered a war crime. This does not bode well for the future of American democracy. Who will stop the next warmonger president?
Please do not buckle under to Bush’s rhetoric about “supporting the troops.” Sending our brave men and women to invade a sovereign country on false pretenses is not “supporting the troops.” Encouraging torture and then allowing the poor grunts who did the dirty work to take the blame is not “supporting the troops.” Keeping our soldiers in a country decimated by an ill-conceived invasion and wracked by civil war is not “supporting the troops.” You will support the troops by bringing them home.
And do not try to use a veto from Bush as an excuse. All you have to do is sit on your hands. If Bush vetoes your spending bill, send him another just like it. If he vetoes that bill, send him yet another or simply sit on your hands! You are our representatives. You have the power of the purse strings, our purse strings. The American people voted the Democrats into office last year to end the war in Iraq. It is time for you to fulfill this duty.
We were so proud of you for standing up to Bush in 2002 when his lies swayed the majority of Americans. Please stand up to this bully once again.
Do not give any more money to Bush for his war of choice.
