In a joint collaboration, Rock Paper Scissors International Galleria and Captured Souls Productions will host the benefit art auction “Give Till It Hurts” Jan. 27 as part of the galleria’s ongoing series, Works from the Vault.
The auction, which runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., will feature an array of skateboard decks and shoes, embellished by more than 18 artists, including skateboarder Matt Dove and ex-pro snowboarder Blair Rusin.
Preceding the auction will be a live skateboarding demonstration in the galleria’s adjacent parking lot. Other events will include live art by Jacqlyn Schroeder, also a local skater, and dub music from DJ P$, a.k.a. Preston Swirnoff.
Proceeds will benefit the Doogood Conservatory, an international nonprofit organization that works to provide free skateboards, surfboards and snowboarding packages to underprivileged youth.
“It’s going to affect our community positively,” art show coordinator Amanda Steinhaus said. “We’re bringing together businesses, youth and the local skateboarding community in a positive way, and I think that’s the most important [thing].”
To cap off the event, Mike Watt, McRad, The Smiles Project, Leiana and Frontside Five will all perform at Winstons from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.
Head of Captured Souls Productions photographer Chuck Pegot said the focus of all events will be primarily on skateboarders, art and music. A skater for about 25 years, he explained, “I’m trying to give back to my upbringing and keep it going with a positive future.”
Additionally, the Doogood Conservatory will sponsor a letter writing contest in which kids can compete for a sponsorship from the Ocean Beach Surf and Skate Shop. Shop manager Matt Medina explained that the idea behind the contest is to reach underprivileged kids who wish to develop their skateboarding skills.
“We asked them to “¦ simply write a letter on why they feel they should be sponsored and what skateboarding does for them and their lives,” Medina said. “In doing so, it just brings out more of a positive attitude in the kids to get them more involved than just riding their skateboards.”
While all entries receive prizes, three winners will win a free skateboard deck. Applications are available at Rock Paper Scissors or the OB Skate Shop and are due Jan. 20. Winners will be announced at the OB Skate Shop on Jan 29 at 4 p.m.
