Merchants urged to obtain sand bags in OB/Point Loma With a week of heavy rain already beginning to fall on the Peninsula area and flash floods a real possibility, the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association (OBMA) is recommending merchants obtain free sand bags as soon as possible. Sand bags may be obtained at the lifeguard station, 1950 Abbott Street. OBMA urges merchants to bring a shovel to take advantage of the sand just a few yards away. Closure twine is attached to the burlap bags. OBMA officials also urge merchants to put the business name or address on the sand bags because thefts have already been reported. Cabaret dances continue at Liberty Station Saturdays through January, San Diego Dance Theater introduces “Intimate Cabaret Dances” to Liberty Station with mood, lighting and the atmosphere of a cabaret nightclub. Performances are Saturday, Jan. 23 and Saturday, Jan. 30 with two shows nightly at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Tickets for the show and pre-show food and wine service are $35; tickets for the show alone are $20, and students are $15. Girls on the Run hosts registration Girls on the Run, an organization striving to foster self-esteem, physical improvement, emotional well-being and healthy lifestyles in young women ages 8 to 12, will soon host signups for the spring 2010 season. Each 12-week session combines curriculum with training for a 5k event. The objective of Girls on the Run is to decrease the number of at-risk behaviors among participants, including reducing eating disorders and adolescent pregnancies, substance/alcohol abuse problems, depression and confrontations with the juvenile justice system, according to organizers. The new session begins Feb. 1 and concludes May 1. Registration remains open until Feb. 19. Registration takes place in Point Loma at the NTC Promenade on Mondays and Thursdays from 4 to 5:15 p.m. In the La Jolla/University Towne Centre area, registration takes place at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center San Diego, 4126 Executive Drive, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 5:15 p.m. For additional information or to register, visit www.gotrsd.org.
