Recording Artists, Actors and Athletes Against Drunk Driving (RADD), the entertainment industry’s voice for road safety, has announced a partnership with Yellow Cab of San Diego to launch the “RADD/My Safe Ride Home Card,” a pre-paid electronic taxi card designed as a risk-intervention tool to avoid DUI injuries and impairment on the road, said Marian Novak, manager of the RADD California Coalition. “I’m pleased to say that San Diego was selected by RADD to become the first city in the United States to offer the RADD/My Safe Ride Home pre-paid taxi card program,” Novak said. “We’re delighted that Yellow Cab of San Diego, Inc., is helping us to make it happen.” San Diego’s emerging pop music duo Ruby Summer were also announced as the new RADD spokespersons in charge of actively getting the message out to teens and young adults. In San Diego County, RADD partners with colleges and the hospitality industry covering more than 65 local bars and restaurants where college students tend to party, including Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Gaslamp District and La Jolla. “Our mutual message is very simple,” said members of Ruby Summer in a joint statement. “Plan ahead, call a cab or use a designated driver.” Organizers said the card is aimed at getting people home safely, including adults who socialize with alcohol, teens of either gender on a bad date or in any other dangerous situation, motorists who are just too tired to drive and seniors who may need a little help getting home. The focus of the summer safety initiative is to let everyone age 21 and over know that they can have a safe ride home without driving after drinking. Supporters of RADD’s initiative include San Diego Police Chief William Lansdowne, David Jones, chairman of the Pacific Beach Hospitality Task Force and Ron Lacey, director of community outreach for the mayor’s office. “Our request today is for teens, young adults and families to visit the RADD site … and check out the RADD/MSRH taxi card,” said Novak. We’re also asking our RADD Rewards retail partners to distribute the card to patrons and honor cardholders with RADD Rewards.” For more information, visit www.radd.org
