We do not need an alcohol ban at the beach
Thank you Councilman Falconer for not knuckling under to the ban-alcohol group and their ceaseless clamor. Despite the unending stream of empty rhetoric about how great things would be at the beaches if the pro-ban individuals had their way, you have stood firm and listened to the voters who have twice rejected such legislation.
The pro-ban group gasses on about how great other cities in the state are since they enacted bans on alcohol at their beaches. Well, I’ve been to the beaches in L.A. and Orange County, which have both had bans for decades, and they’re not all that great. And not once has the pro-ban group addressed the problem of how an already over-burdened SDPD will have to cope with enforcing a new set of laws.
Councilman Falconer, we do not need an alcohol ban at the beaches.
David A. Lathrap, Pacific Beach

Faulconer should be commended for efforts
All too often, we respond to the negative in city government. I am writing today to recognize the positive.
I had a chance to see Councilman Faulconer’s State of the District address (“Faulconer assesses state of District 2, March 15). I think it’s great that he would take the time to put together something specific to the needs and interests of District 2. In his speech, he talked about important issues to those of us who live and work in the district. He is to be commended for prioritizing funding for Mission Bay Park and ensuring the public safety needs of the residents and guests in our beach communities are met, among other things. Faulconer remained standing to deliver his address despite having had surgery a few days before. I am also proud of his efforts to balance the needs of all parties in updating the Downtown Community Plan.
In short, I’m glad to see that he didn’t just make promises, but that he’s making an effort to fulfill those promises. I look forward to his next State of the District address to hear what else he’s accomplished for us.
Daniella Renee, Downtown
