LJCPA holds special election
La Jolla Community Planning Association (LJCPA) will hold an election at its Aug. 7 meeting to fill three trustee vacancies. Along with three declared candidates, the group announced it will allow write-in nominees.
Although Tom Brady, Bob Collins and Mike Costello stated their intent to run for three vacant LJCPA trustee positions during July’s meeting, LJCPA chair Joe LaCava said in a press release that the ballot will also allow space for write-ins.
Only LJCPA members can vote in the election, which begins at 3 p.m. and closes at 7 p.m. The meeting will start at 6 p.m., LaCava said.
“The two top vote-getters get the longest term and the other will get the shortest term,” LaCava said. “The bylaws were changed a couple of years ago by not allowing proxy votes.
“This is a special election to fill seats because of vacancies on the board midyear, and we don’t have elections very often. When we get three seats, we need to fill them up.”
Regarding write-ins, LaCava said that because LJCPA had three vacancies and three candidates, he wanted to encourage members to vote.
“I don’t think there is much precedent for write-ins, but there’s always that choice in this case,” LaCava said. “There’s three seats and three people, so that might inspire people. I want to make sure to inspire people to come out and vote.”

Blind cyclists ride thru UC
Six bicyclists from the Braille Institute’s San Diego Youth Program will join more than 50 cyclists Sunday, Aug. 3, at about 3:30 p.m. for the last leg of the fourth annual Cycling for Sight (CFS) ride culminating in University City.
CFS cyclists start their three-day ride in Santa Barbara and finish in San Diego. Blind students ride tandem with sighted cyclists. Event coordinators expect cyclists to arrive about 3:30 p.m. at Braille Institute’s San Diego Center, 4555 Executive Drive, followed by a finish line celebration.
