Troop 506 to hold open house Joining the Boy Scouts requires dedication and hard work, and provides friendship, adventure and challenge. La Jolla Boy Scout Troop 506 invites the community to learn more about its activities during an open house on Monday, Nov. 30, 6:30 p.m., at the La Jolla United Methodist Church, 6063 La Jolla Blvd. The Boy Scouts teaches survival, civic and leadership skills, and aims to build character in its troops. Many Boy Scouts have risen through the ranks at Troop 506 to tackle impressive projects and become Eagle Scouts, the highest rank of honor. In the past three years, more than 80 percent of the members have achieved Eagle status. Scouting is also a nonstop adventure. Last year, the Boy Scouts in Troop 506 went tubing in Mission Bay, mountain biked at Mt. Laguna, surfed at San Elijo State Park, backpacked in the Sierras, canoed down the Colorado River, skied at Big Bear, rock-climbed at Joshua Tree and camped on Catalina Island. Forty boys and 16 adults make up the troop, which was founded in 1964 and has been chartered by the La Jolla United Methodist Church. Interested members are always invited to drop by the United Methodist fellowship hall to learn more on any Monday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. For more information call Mark, (858) 483-3642. Bicyclist killed after collision with police car A bicyclist was hit and killed by a police car on Nov. 9 at 7:19 a.m., according to police reports. Walter Freeman, 64, had pulled out in front of the car to enter the left turn lane at 6400 Genesee Ave., police said. Freeman was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. The police officer was responding to a call but was driving under the 45 miles per hour speed limit and did not have his siren or lights on, according to Detective Wall, who requested his first name not be published. The collision shattered the police car’s windshield and damaged its hood, lights and roof. Traffic on Genesee Avenue was backed up until noon, Wall said.
