Three people were ordered Sept. 3 to stand trial for robbing a University City bank in which a security guard shot one of the robbers.
After hearing from 19 witnesses in the preliminary hearing, San Diego Superior Court Judge Howard Shore ordered the trio to stand trial for the June 11 robbery of the Wells Fargo Bank on Genesee Avenue.
A security guard shot Casey Allen Wilson, 27, of El Cajon, who appeared in court with a cast around his arm. Wilson, Laura Joyce Elshire, 42, and Robert Anthony Hodge, 28, were ordered to stand trial.
Hodge was also ordered to stand trial for allegedly committing four other bank robberies in San Diego and Del Mar. Police Det. DeWayne Glazewski said he interviewed Hodge and said he admitted to all of the hold-ups.
Glazewski testified Wilson and Elshire went inside the bank with Wilson presenting a note to a teller. Elshire was disguised with a blonde wig and wearing a baseball cap, but she never made it outside the bank, according to testimony.
A security guard shot Wilson who escaped and the guard held Elshire inside at gunpoint, along with most of the money. Hodge was driving the getaway car, a Cadillac that belonged to Wilson’s girlfriend, said Glazewski.
“He was in a panic because Casey was bleeding in the car … and decided he would drop him off at a Sharp Hospital,” said Glazewski.
Hodge drove into Mexico, but police there arrested him and turned him over to San Diego police on July 6.
Elshire is also accused of possessing contraband in jail. Two witnesses testified Elshire received some razor blades from someone visiting her at the Las Colinas Women’s Detention Facility. Deputy Marilyn Mendez testified she patted Elshire down after the visit and discovered the contraband and two to three cream-colored rocks in a clear bag in her bra on July 25.
A trial date will be set on Sept. 17. All three have pleaded not guilty, and all remain in jail on high bail.
