Shores lifeguard station to go before city
Next Thursday, July 10, members of the City of San Diego Planning Commission will hear an appeal regarding the La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Station project, which was approved in 2005, then granted an extension months ago.
“The hearing officer approved the extension of time,” said Tim Golba, City of San Diego Planning Commissioner, adding that somebody appealed that May 7 decision based on archaeological evidence in the Spindrift area of La Jolla.
The La Jolla Shores Lifeguard Tower Project plans to raze the existing building and steel container near Kellogg Park on Calle Frescota and then build a new 1,485-square-foot station.
Connected by a breezeway, the two-building station would include a 30-foot observation tower over the boardwalk and sand. A detached 650-square-foot, single-story rescue vehicle and equipment facility would be built in the parking lot.
“The tricky part came in because the municipal code says that there needs to be no new issues [for an extension],” Golba said. “In this case, the review on the project in the Spindrift area crept up as a new requirement.”
Because of the paleontology and archeology, the environmental document is invalid now, so that is the basis of the appeal, Golba said.
The hearing begins at 9 a.m. at City Council Chambers, 12th floor, 202 C St.
