Fat Cat Beer Company, restaurants Herringbone, Whisknladle, Draft Republic and Isola Pizza, environmental watchdog Surfrider Foundation and the La Jolla Fire Department are teaming up to form a La Jolla trash clean-up campaign coined It Takes a Village Project, set for Sunday, Jan. 25, from noon to 3:30 p.m. Volunteers will meet at Herringbone, 7837 Herschel Ave., at 11:30 to collect their trash bags and directions of the clean-up walk. Everyone is invited to participate. Fat Cat is the event organizer. “I was walking around the Village with my 7-year-old daughter Christina,” Fat Cat owner Bruce Taub said, “when she started pointing out all of the trash that was lying in the street, gutters and sidewalks. She asked me why it looks like everyone throws their garbage in the streets and not in trash cans. Unfortunately, I had to explain to her that many people don’t care [about] litter even though it is bad for the environment and makes our neighborhoods dirty, ugly and unpleasant.” Realizing this was an opportunity to make an impact, Taub set out to organize a team composed of Fat Cat employees and other local businesses to rid the streets of trash. “This trash-pick-up walk,” Taub said, “will benefit our wonderful La Jolla Village community and have a widespread impact. Not only is it great for the environment, but locals and tourists will of course enjoy a cleaner setting, and businesses in the Village will thrive from an overall cleaner environment as well. La Jolla is the jewel of San Diego, and I want to uphold that reputation by making it look like what it truly should be.” The Village will be divided into four parts. The team of 75 volunteers, each with a trash bag, will walk the streets removing debris. Each volunteer will be give a logo T-shirt of the event. For more information, call Fat Cat at (858) 375-7500.
