OBTC to fete outstanding volunteers at gala The Ocean Beach Town Council will host its annual awards dinner on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to honor outstanding volunteers and recognize the 2013 Citizen of the Year.
The event will include a no-host cocktail hour at Shades Oceanfront Bistro, followed by dinner and awards. Cocktails begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.
The gala will also include the administration of the oath of office for the Town Council’s Board of Directors for 2013-14.
Reservations are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Shades is located at 5083 Santa Monica Ave.

The Ocean Beach MainStreet Association will celebrate its 35th anniversary awards dinner by honoring local merchants and volunteers in the community who make a difference.
The awards dinner runs from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Point Loma Masonic Center, 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Food will be provided by local eateries, along with beer and wine. Women Voters to host forum on FDA, drugs The League of Women Voters will host a discussion titled “The FDA:  How Safe Are Your Drugs and Medical Devices?” during the group’s October meeting.
The forum will include a short video on how the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approves new drugs and a presentation on the workings of the FDA.
Among the topics:
• What is a generic drug and a “me too” drug?
• What is off-label use of drugs?
• Does the FDA monitor manufacturers worldwide?
• Why do we have drug shortages?
• Should taxpayers fund 100 percent of the drug-approval process?
• Should the FDA permit more prescription drugs be converted to over-the-counter drugs as is done in other countries?
The discussion will be held at the Point Loma/Hervey Branch Library, 3701 Voltaire St. from 1 to 3 p.m.
