The International Children’s Choir is making its final tour stop at the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church to enchant audiences with unforgettable classic folklore acoustics.
The performance will be held at the church, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd., on Sunday, Nov. 11 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The church will also be holding a workshop on Sat., Nov. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon for children interested in performing and enhancing their musical talents, said church officials.
The International Children’s Choir began as a music camp in Romania. Connie Fortunato, director of the International Children’s Choir and a children’s choir specialist, visited Romania and invited 300 children from orphanages and schools to attend the music camp.
Not all of the children knew how to play instruments, said Myron Tweed, concert series coordinator.
“Fortunato taught them to read and they also had other instructors that taught them, so they were immersed in the music experience,” he said.
The concert in Romania was such a success that Ukrainian government officials requested that Fortunato hold a music camp in their country. The Ukrainian music camp had a turnout of 500 children. After each camp’s success, Tweed suggested Fortunato create an International choir.
“I said, ‘Connie, why don’t you make up a children’s choir and bring them to America and tour with them?'” Tweed said.
Twelve children from Romania, 16 from the Ukraine and 10 from Fortunato’s own choir in Monterey, Calif., have been touring the country for two weeks with seven chaperones.
The tour began in Washington, D.C., where the choir performed for the Romanian and Ukrainian embassies.
The show will feature classic folklore sounds from Romania, the Ukraine and the United States, according to organizers. Coordinators are asking for donations at the performance to help pay for tour expenses.
