Swanson Pool at Standley Recreation Center, 3585 Governor Drive, is scheduled to reopen Jan. 7 after being closed for two months for its scheduled summer repairs and then closing again in October for an overhaul and resurfacing.
Although the pool was previously closed from May through June, the budget at that time wouldn’t allow officials to resurface the fiberglass shell, which involves a gel coating, said Isabel Vargas, district manager of Community Parks II Division.
In addition, when the pool reopened, its condition worsened, increasing the need to reclose it, she said.
“It’s a fiberglass pool and the gel covers the fiberglass so it doesn’t cut anyone,” Vargas said.
After being drained, the pool has been gel coated, and the pool’s manager scheduled completion for January, when all the programs will be reinstated.
“The locker rooms have been painted and we are hoping to get new carpeting in the office,” Vargas said.
Swanson Pool hosts youth swim and water polo teams. The center will continue with its lap swimming and water exercise classes and will take the names of anyone interested in swim lessons.
“We’ll have all our programs going on,” Vargas said. “We have an enthusiastic pool manager who’s concentrating on hosting the pool to junior high schools right now, and eventually all of the schools.”
Although budget constraints require all pools to close, Vargas said she doesn’t foresee any other repairs in the future. The city pools close on a rotating basis, and park officials try to keep closures in the same time frame, she said.
“We usually put our closure schedule up in early September,” Vargas said. “Right now we should be good to go unless something unexpected comes up. We try to close in October so we’re open in the spring for swim lessons.”
