A couple of local scholastic boys tennis teams have served up another winning combo in 2007.
At La Jolla High, the Vikings under head coach Lenny Lee final with an overall mark of 17-1, with the lone loss to Poway High. The Vikings finished as Western League champs with a 10-0 league record.
“The immediate focus for the team is to capture its ninth consecutive CIF team championship,” Lee said.
Looking ahead to the Western league and CIF individual tournaments, La Jolla has several players who are highly seeded in the Western League individual tournament. Kyle Van Buskirk is the number one seed for Western League singles.
Four La Jolla doubles teams ” Niko Karnopp/Theo Lee; PJ Woolley/Daniel Lapidus; Max Einhorn/Harper Allan; and Erwin Hernandez/Chris Langbort ” are all seeded to advance to the quarterfinals of the Western League doubles tournament.
At the neighboring Bishop’s School, the Knights and head coach Jose Ruelas finished second in the Coastal League to Francis Parker with a record of 10-2. Bishop’s overall record came in at 13-4.
Key players for the Knights have been Scotty Rogers at number one singles, Carlos Trevino in doubles, and the team of Armen Abagyan and Robert Xie. In addition, Vasu Prathipati has performed well as a number one doubles player.
“We will need to play better in our doubles matches while needing a solid performance in singles if we want to have a shot at a Division III title,” Ruelas noted. “We have had an excellent year as far as chemistry and the boys have had a lot of fun getting to know each other better. Highlights include defeating La Jolla Country Day School twice in the regular season.”
” Editor’s note: La Jolla Country Day School was asked to provide information for this story.
