In an effort to raise funds to complete a project started nearly five years ago, the community of Bird Rock will host its annual Bird Rock Home Tour on Saturday, Jan. 26.
Michelle Fulks of the Bird Rock Community Council (BRCC) said residents began discussing the project ” to build an access gate for the park portion of Bird Rock Elementary School. The project is also designed to bring the park up to code for the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Fulks said an architect came up with a design for the project, called the Bird Rock Park Gate Project. The estimated cost is $45,000.
In town, people affectionately call it the Waverly Gate project, Fulks said. Since the BRCC started the fund-raising home tour in 2006, she estimates they have raised about $15,000. But they have received donations from many sources, including an anonymous family.
This year’s lead sponsor is Tim Golba of Golba Architecture, and there are 10 other sponsors, Fulks said. Tickets are $25, or $20 for BRCC members. On the day of the event, attendees can start the tour at either Bird Rock Coffee Roasters or La Jolla Mailbox Rentals, where they may pick up a wristband and a program.
“Right now the homes are a secret,” Fulks said. “We have six homes in all.”
The owners of the homes have an interest in Bird Rock Elementary School and decided to open their homes for the tour to help in the fund-raising effort. Fulks said one home is very historical, because it was one of the first built in Bird Rock. Three are recently remodeled and are different styles. Two are the “original footprints with no square footage added,” she said.
All are beautiful, but none is for sale, Fulks said.
