LA JOLLA – La Jolla Country Day is gearing up to defend its home field when Bishop’s visits in a rivalry showdown Thursday night on the gridiron. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. “I know their kids are excited about it, we’re excited about it, it should be a lot of fun,” LJCD head coach Jeff Hutzler said. “This is Harvard-Yale man. This is Notre Dame-Michigan. This is Michigan-Ohio State. It’s certainly a lot of fun.” Both teams are riding high after impressive wins. While the Torreys blew out Las Vegas Mountain View Christian 37-14 last week, the Knights turned some heads with their 26-21 season-opening victory over El Capitan. “We had a great game a couple of weeks ago,” Bishop’s head coach Joel Allen said. “To go over to El Cap and get a win was a really nice way to start the season but we definitely know the importance of this game.” Bishop’s boasts a slew of seasoned veterans including explosive tailback Alec Fisher. LJCD is led by underclassmen trying to define a new era of football at the school. “We’re a very young team this year with a lot of sophomores in starting positions,” Hutlzer said. “We’re looking for them to have a great game against a senior-heavy Bishop’s team.” If recent history is any indication of the impending outcome then fans will be treated to a nailbiter. Last year the Knights pulled out a one-point victory, repaying the Torreys for their 21-20 win in 2008. The home team has come out on top in each of the last two seasons. Allen is hoping to reverse that trend. “They have a pretty good quarterback so we’re going to try and contain him,” Allen said. “If we do that and tackle well and play physical I think we’ll be okay. They’re going to pull everything out. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some trick plays or fourth down attempts.”
