POINT LOMA — The Fort Guijarros Museum Foundation will host the 29th annual Fort Guijarros Fiesta in Point Loma on Saturday, Sept. 18 from 3 to 6 p.m. The foundation will welcome the public to help honor the memory of 18th-century Spanish and 20th-century American soldiers and sailors who served to protect their nations on Point Loma. Proceeds from the fiesta will support the Fort Guijarros Museum Foundation. Guests will participate in four featured events. The world premiere of playwright Welton Jones’ “Meet Jaguarina” will be performed on stage at the National Register, U.S. Army YMCA building built in 1919. The play will feature Laura Kaplan, who portrays the famous and undefeated fencing swordfighter Jaguarina, who performed on American stages in the 1880s. Supporting Kaplan is Michael Nieto, Jaguarina’s manager, who will perform musical instruments, fence and draw the audience into the songs. Ronald V. May, a historic archaeologist, will lead guests on a brief walking tour of the outside of some of the Fort Rosecrans Historic District along Sylvester Street. The Colonial Revival buildings are viewed as among the finest in the city. Also seen will be the 1940 hospital, 1904 bakery, and 1904 quartermaster’s supply building. Weapons specialist Graydon Scott Anderson will provide a brief lecture on an exclusive exhibit of rifles and pistols used by soldiers at U.S. Army Base, Fort Rosecrans. The actual weapons will be on exhibit, although disabled for security. Faunal analyst Paula Reynolds will also explain an exhibit of butchered food bone recovered from the 18th-century Spanish Army at Fort Guijarros, and later food bone from the civilian whaling station at Ballast Point and U.S. Army Base, Fort Rosecrans. Guests will be treated to hors d’oeuvres, wine, soda and beer provided during the Fiesta. Door prizes will be handed out randomly. Tickets for the event are $40. For reservations, send admission to the Fort Guijarros Museum Foundation, P.O. Box 23130, San Diego, 92193 by Sept. 13, or e-mail [email protected]. For more information, call (619) 224-2194, or visit www.fortguijarros.com.
