Free tax service available to disadvantaged
Free income tax services are now available for financially disadvantaged residents through April 18 at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot.
The program is hosted by the IRS VoIunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Ederly programs. Those eligible include low-income individuals, senior citizens, individuals with disabilities and those who speak English as a second language.
Taxpayers are asked to bring photo identification and valid taxpayer identification, all pertinent tax documents, a copy of last year’s return and any other relevant financial information. Walk-ins, appointments and eFILE options are available.
Tax preparation will take place at 3700 Chosin Ave., Bldg. 12, Mondays through Fridays from 7:30 to 11 a.m. For more information, call Michael McDonald (619) 524-1204.
Liberty Station for
Education Day planned
Residents can experience new shops and restaurants while supporting area schools in Point Loma on Wednesday, March 5. That’s when High Tech High Village Schools hold its inaugural Liberty Station for Education Day.
Several shops and restaurants will participate in the event, according to organizers. In addition to donating a percentage of their sales from the day to several local schools based at Liberty Station, the businesses will also offer raffle prizes.
The funds raised will directly support math, science and literacy education at the schools, which include Explorer Elementary School, Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High, High Tech Middle School, High Tech High Middle Media Arts, High Tech High International and High Tech High Media Arts.
“There’s great things at Liberty Station for people to see,” said Dena Meeder, a parent volunteer at Explorer Elementary. “But this will also help local schools.”
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. March 5 and will include restaurant and market tastings and a student art show. Liberty Station is located on Truxtun Road between Womble Street and Roosevelt Road.
