Mission Bay teams ready for October league races

With September in the books, a number of Mission Bay fall sports teams head into October looking to secure league victories.
On the boys’ beach volleyball scene, the Bucs, under head coach Nikki Caufield, fell to second place in league play with a tough 2-1 loss to The Bishop’s School.
“We had an injury that required us to re-shuffle our lineup at the last minute and it may have cost us the match,” Caufield stated. “We clearly had the stronger teams but really played down to our competition. Our first and second-ranked team both lost close matches in three games so the entire match came down to one or two plays.”  Kieran Wills teamed up with Dusty Schraeder to win their match easily in two games (21-10 and 21-8). Jake Smyrnos and Ryan Derry also had a really good win in their junior varsity match and are continuing to improve.  “We have one more match against first-place Coronado on Oct. 13 that promises to be a tough one as we play in Coronado where it is extremely windy in the afternoons.  Coronado has played every match at their home courts this year where the wind gives them a huge advantage. Unfortunately, until we can get courts built at MBHS finding court space to play matches is going to continue to be a challenge.”  Playoffs for both team and individuals pairs are scheduled to start in two weeks and will continue through early November. Football
Mission Bay had a bye this past weekend. Under head coach Willie Matson, the Bucs enter play this week with a record of 3-2 as they prepare to host Lincoln this Friday.
According to Matson, junior running back Kenyon Sims, senior wide receiver Keyon Holiday, and senior defensive back Tyrese Reed are all performing at a high level for the team.
