Padres acquire Straily from Astros for Kratz

The San Diego Padres March 26 announced they have acquired right-handed pitcher Dan Straily from the Houston Astros in exchange for catcher Erik Kratz. Executive vice president/general manager A.J. Preller made the announcement.
Straily, 27, went 10-9 with a 4.77 ERA (65 ER, 122.2 IP) and 124 strikeouts against just 25 walks in 22 starts for Triple-A Fresno in 2015, also appearing in four games, three starts, for the Major League club. He has appeared in five games, one start, for the Astros so far this spring.  Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Oakland Athletics (2012-14), Chicago Cubs (2014) and Astros (2015) he has gone 13-13 with a 4.60 ERA (133 ER, 260.1 IP) and 217 strikeouts against 105 walks in 52 games, 45 starts. The right-hander was originally signed by the Athletics as a 24th-round selection in the 2009 First-Year Player Draft out of Marshall University (WV).
During his rookie campaign for the Oakland A’s in 2013 he finished fourth in American League Rookie of the Year voting after going 10-8 with a 3.96 ERA (67 ER, 152.1 IP) and 124 strikeouts against 57 walks in 27 starts.
Kratz, 35, has hit .231 (6-for-26) with one home run in 18 games this spring. He was signed by the Padres as a minor league free agent this past offseason on Nov. 8, 2015.  Originally signed by the Toronto Blue Jays as a 29th-round selection in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, he has hit .218 (112-for-514) with 23 doubles, 23 home runs, 69 RBI and 52 runs scored in 192 games played over parts of six Major League seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2010-13, 2015), Blue Jays (2014) and Kansas City Royals (2014-15).

With this transaction the Padres currently have a full 40-man roster.
