Architects group to fête two with Mosher Award

American Institute of Architects (AIA) San Diego board president Michael Roush and the 2015 board of directors have announced that architects Donald Goldman and James Alcorn are this year’s recipients of the prestigious Robert Mosher Lifetime Achievement Award and will honor the men I a public ceremony at the Tasende Gallery, 820 Prospect St. in La Jolla, on Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. The chapter confers the AIA San Diego Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of one or more of the following: a member’s significant body of work, local contributions to the chapter and enduring contributions to the community in areas of design, service, volunteerism and/or leadership. Goldman’s career has spanned nearly six decades, and his award-winning designs captured the essence of their time. “Buildings,” Goldman said, “should be part of the fabric of our community.” Alcorn focused his expertise and imagination on clean lines and modern design, starting in the early 1960s. His style is designed to contribute a rich and thoughtful sense of value and aesthetic. Each of these architects has been responsible for a long list of projects. The county and its residents are said to have benefited as a result of both men’s talents. Robert Mosher, FAIA, who died in La Jolla in July at age 94, was one of San Diego’s best recognized architects and among the leaders of the California modernist movement. He is perhaps best known for his design of the Coronado Bridge, completed in 1969, and was the designer of record for many highly regarded buildings in San Diego and beyond. Tickets are available at aiasandiego.org/event/2015-lifetime-achievement-awards/. For more information about this award and the upcoming presentation event, contact AIASD Executive Director Bastiaan Bouma at [email protected] or (619) 232-0109.
