It should not be a surprise that former La Jolla Country Day School basketball great Candice Wiggins wants to give back to San Diego.
Wiggins, who starred at La Jolla Country Day School and Stanford University, is now a member of the WNBA’s Minnesota Lynx. Early next month, Wiggins, the June WNBA Rookie of the Month, returns to La Jolla to pass along some of her basketball skills to local youth.
The Candice Wiggins Basketball Camp will take place at La Jolla Country Day School Aug. 1 to 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., for boys and girls ages 6 through 17 in the San Diego area.
For $150, campers will receive guidance from a staff of basketball experts, a T-shirt and a unique opportunity to interact and learn the basketball basics from Wiggins. A number of the staff assisting Wiggins will be coaches with high school and college experience, including some LJCD alumni.
La Jolla Country Day School head girls basketball coach Terri Bamford, who expects some 90 to 100 kids in the camp, said she is excited that Wiggins is helping out those who love basketball in her hometown.
“Candice contacted me about this idea and wanted to see if the gym was available,” Bamford said. “It is a case of Candice wanting to give back to the community. She has a great attitude, and she has worked really hard to get where she is.”
Wiggins has been a force on the Minnesota team this season, where she is second on the team in scoring with a 17.2 points-per-game average.
