University City (UC) High School rolled into softball action this week with a record of 8-2 (3-0 in league play).
The Lady Centurions have won five straight games, outscoring their opponents during that streak 33-9.
One of the wins was over cross-town rival La Jolla High. UC beat the Lady Vikings on April 21 by a score of 10-2.
UC will visit Clairemont this afternoon, April 27.
Neighboring La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School was not as fortunate last week, dropping a 12-1 decision to league foe Francis Parker in five innings.
LJCD’s one run came on a double by Samantha Berenter followed by a double by her sister, Alexandra Berenter.
The Lady Torreys, who host Horizon today, April 27, entered action this week with a record of 5-5 (0-1 league). The loss to Parker follows LJCD’s biggest win of the season, a 22-0 drubbing of Calvin Christian earlier this month.
In recent baseball action, the UCHS varsity baseball team continued competition in the tough Western League, prevailing over the neighboring La Jolla Vikings April 22 by a score of 3-2.
Down 3-1, Viking Zach Tonks had a one-out pinch-hit single to start the rally. Peterson then tripled in pinch runner David Harpster to move the score to 3-2, but UC prevailed.
La Jolla High Head Coach Gary Frank remained upbeat after the loss.
“We finished the week up very strong,” he said. “We played our worst game of the year on Wednesday (April 19) against Coronado, but give our guys credit ” they bounced back and played by far our two best games of the year, against Cathedral and UC.”
