At approximately 4 p.m. on Nov. 27, San Diego Police Officers made a traffic stop in the area of 3700 La Jolla Village Drive. During the course of that traffic stop, 24 year-old passenger Aleah Mariah Jenkins was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant for possession of methamphetamines. While at the scene, Jenkins became ill and vomited. The officers called for paramedics, but Jenkins said she had only had an upset stomach, so medics were cancelled. Jenkins was transported to San Diego Police Headquarters for processing, prior to being booked into jail. While at police headquarters, the officer noticed Jenkins was unresponsive and appeared to be in medical distress. Officers immediately began life-saving efforts and called for medical assistance. San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel responded to assist. Due to the seriousness of Jenkins’ condition, investigators from the Homicide Unit were assigned to investigate the incident. The investigators are conducting an exhaustive investigation into the facts surrounding the arrest and the events leading up to Jenkins going into medical distress. During the course of the medical intervention, controlled substances were found concealed in Jenkins’ clothing. At this point, there is no indication any force was used on Jenkins. Jenkins was pronounced dead on Dec. 6. The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. The officers that originally stopped the vehicle Jenkins was in, have been identified as Nicholas Casciola and Jason Taub. Officer Lawrence Durbin assisted the other officers with transporting Jenkins.
