Patrick J. Mullanney, 69, peninsula resident

Patrick Jerome Mullanney, formerly director of Doctors’ Hospital Emergency Services for 16 years, died of lung cancer on Saturday, Jan. 13 at the age of 69. Following his tenure with Doctors’ Hospital, he began a private general surgical practice in the Loma Portal area of San Diego.
Raised in Cincinnati, Ohio, he attended Roger Bacon High School before enrolling at the University of Cincinnati for his undergraduate studies and later graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine. His internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology was at Wayne County General Hospital in Detroit.
Following his medical training, Dr. Mullanney joined the US Navy and was stationed with the Marine Corps in Vietnam. His experience as a front-line field doctor in Vietnam introduced him to the area of emergency medicine, a field where he spent the major part of his medical career. In 1974, he co-edited the book “Emergency Care: Assessment and Intervention.” He is also the author of a seminal article on the treatment of stingray injuries published in Modern Medicine.
Dr. Mullanney will be remembered by his friends and family for his quick wittedness and his ability to offer a clever joke to meet every occasion.
He is survived by his children Jennith Schleier (Stephen) of Fairfield, Conn., Matthew Mullanney of San Diego, Kelly Johnson (Cray) of Decatur, Ga., and Kara Lecker (Jamie) of Woodbridge, Conn., grandchildren Joshua and Maddison Lecker of Woodbridge, Conn. and brother Dan Mullanney of Cincinnati, Ohio.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Point Loma.
