The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is celebrating 75 years in the region with a free Community Day 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. Gather friends and family and head to MCASD La Jolla for a full day of contemporary art-inspired fun. Community Day will kick off with the new David C. Copley director and CEO Kathryn Kanjo and director emeritus and campaign and expansion director Hugh M. Davies discussing the museum’s history and future. Artist Kim MacConnel and MCASD trustees Christopher Calkins, Carolyn Farris, and Dr. Charles G. Cochrane will join for a conversation moderated by Derrick Cartwright, associate professor and director of University Galleries at the University of San Diego. Have you heard about the MCASD expansion plans? See the expansion model up close and learn more about this exciting project with on-the-hour architectural tours that will take you from MCASD’s beginnings as Ellen Browning Scripps’ home to renderings of the new building. A pop-up park in the museum’s ocean-view parking lot will offer live music, casual food truck fare, communal picnic tables, and art-making activities for all. Enjoy a hosted lemonade stand and cupcakes in the afternoon, while creating your own works of art inspired by iconic pieces from the museum’s permanent collection, such as Nancy Rubins’ “Pleasure Point” and Ellsworth Kelly’s “Red Blue Green.” UCSD students in the Museum Exhibition and Programs class will lead tours of the current exhibition, The Uses of Photography. Community Day is made possible thanks to the Audrey S. Geisel, San Diego Foundation/Dr. Seuss Fund.
