The Friends of Rose Creek teamed up with members of the Church of Latter Day Saints recently, delving into the annual Creek to Bay Cleanup event. The Church of Latter Day Saints also helped scour the local waterways during its annual Mormon “Helping Hands Day.”?According to volunteer Scott Chipman, the purpose of the event was to “ensure that thousand pounds of trash did not make its way into the creek, fouling the water running into Mission Bay.”?Chipman was also the site captain for the upper Rose Creek cleanup.?The cleanup was divided into two sections: the upper creek near the Santa Fe Street Bridge and the lower creek between Mission Beach Drive and the Rose Creek Bridge, east of Mission Bay High School. Billy Paul, a Clairemont resident and member of Friends of Rose Creek, joined volunteers from the church on the upper creek.?”Our goal was to make it nicer along Mission Bay and create a bike path between Mission Bay High School and Rose Creek,” said Paul. “We still have more work to do on it, so we’re not done yet.”?Paul is also a longtime volunteer for local environmental projects. The lower creek volunteers, whose task was to remove debris, non-native plants and to clear access for service vehicles and creek visitors, filled two dumpsters, while the upper creek volunteers filled another dumpster with debris left behind by the homeless.
