Record-breaking numbers run Half-Marathon

The La Jolla Half-Marathon, held Sunday, April 22, along San Diego’s scenic coast and ending at La Jolla Cove, had its most successful year, selling out at it earliest date and hosting the most participants in race history.
“The race was fantastic ” the best ever,” said Douglas Bradley, event chair and Kiwanis Club member. “The race sold out in advance on April 1, and there were a lot of great participants in the 5K and the Stride. It was our biggest event ever, and there was just a lot of good stuff going on.”
The race, organized to generate funds for La Jolla’s Kiwanis Foundation, drew close to 6,900 participants in all three races that were offered, which were the half-marathon, 5K and the Stride “” open to families with small children, according to Bradley.
That number does not include close to 26 sailors from the U.S.S. Nimitz who had registered for the race but were recently deployed to Guam before Sunday. Many of them reportedly ran the race on treadmills positioned on the boat’s deck, according to Bradley, who also mentioned that they planned to send the Kiwanis Foundation an MP3 of their race.
Although no race time records were broken, the participants placing first for both men and women did an amazing job, Bradley said.
Sean Birrin raced through the finish line at 1:13:11, and Sherri Ellerby clocked in at 1:28:58, according to time records.
