Old Town San Diego’s Founder’s Day is an opportunity to recognize and reflect on those who were living and contributing to the region before San Diego was established. The Kumeyaay people, who first inhabited the area, respected the land, rivers and ocean that brought them food, water and livelihood.
The community is grateful to them for being such a significant part of San Diego’s history, and for their perseverance to exist under turbulent times and circumstances. Founders’ Day also recognizes all of the people who, over the years, have contributed to San Diego’s unique qualities, cultures and traditions.
San Diego is a tapestry of many people and many dreams. Founders’ Day honors those who dared to dream and contributed to making San Diego unique and admired for its diversity and many historical accomplishments.
1769 marks the year the first settlement of Alta California was established, which included a mission and presidio. The City of San Diego and Old Town Chamber of Commerce, along with other community organizations, will hold the Founders’ Day Festival to commemorate the birth of San Diego from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 14-15 at Old Town San Diego.
