Music on the Point, the concert series hosted by All Souls’ Episcopal Church, returns on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 4 p.m. The opening concert will be performed by Gabriel Arregui, organist-choirmaster of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Encinitas. Arregui, an ambassdor for the organ and its literature, will offer works by J.S. Bach, Petr Erben, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Dieterich Buxtehude and Jean Langlais.
This concert season celebrates the 30th anniversary of the construction of San Diego’s only historically informed pipe organ. It was created over more than three years in the Fritts-Richards workshop in Tacoma, Wash., and is constructed of hand-crafted woodwork and pipework. The organ case is adorned with hand-carved, gold-leafed wooden sculptures representing the creatures that live in the tidepools of Point Loma. With the exception of the organ blower and the console lighting, the action of the instrument is completely mechanical, using the finest aspects of 17th century organ-building technology. For many, this organ remains one of the city’s best-kept secrets. For afiicionados of fine music, it is a constant delight to see and hear. The public is cordially invited to attend all of the concerts. There is a suggested donation of $5, although no one is turned away. Students are welcome at no charge. A reception follows, where audience members may greet the performer and enjoy All Souls’ hospitality and fellowship.
