La Jolla boys take city swim meet by storm

Swimming gold surfaced recently for the La Jolla High School boys swim team as the Vikings captured the City Championships for the fourth year in a row. La Jolla’s girls team also did well, placing second.
“The boys and girls swim teams were amazing this past week at the City Conference Championships,” said Tom Atwell, La Jolla High’s head swim coach.
The Vikings were led by junior Tyler Woods, who won the 50 free and the 200 free relay foursome (school record) of Alex Arcidiacono, Mike Vesprimi, Hunter Gettelfinger and Woods.
On the girls side, La Jolla had great efforts from senior Kelly Wahl, juniors Grace Benefield and Sammantha McLaughlin and sophomore Tami Tran.
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights placed fourth in the City Championships.
Noel Elgamal won the 100 fly with a time of :59.20, while Andrea Basaraba won the 500 free with a time of 5:04.23.
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Torreys qualified eight swimmers for CIF competition.
On the girls side, those qualifying were seniors Melanie Kaplan (500 free) and Chelsea Burns (50 free, 100 free), who competed in individual events, as well as the 200 free relay with junior Claire Altree and freshman Alexandra Trifunovic.
On the boys side, senior Ryan Frace (100 back) and junior Henry Clausner (100 breast) swim in the 200 medley relay with freshman Donald Dean and junior Jihoon Yoon.
