Schroeder pays some restitution as theft sentencing delayed

Peter Schroeder has paid $35,000 toward restitution to victims who lost money from consignment sales of pianos at his former piano store in La Jolla, the prosecutor said Jan. 5. Schroeder, 75, was scheduled to face sentencing in the case Jan. 5, but the judge was absent. The sentencing was rescheduled for Feb. 9 in San Diego Superior Court. Schroeder remains free on his own recognizance. Deputy District Attorney Paul Greenwood said Schroeder had deposited $35,000 in his attorney’s trust account set aside for restitution. The total restitution is $141,000, according to court records. Schroeder was the owner of the former Schroeder Piano Company when it was located at 5680 La Jolla Blvd. in Bird Rock. It closed its doors in February of 2015 after people claimed their pianos either disappeared or were sold for a lesser amount than they wanted. Schroeder pleaded guilty Oct. 26 to four counts of theft from an elder in which the piano’s owner was older than 70. Although the maximum sentence is seven years’ imprisonment, Schroeder is unlikely to receive that due to his age and the prospect of restitution. Fraud sentences vary from judge to judge, but in general, the payment of restitution to victims often reduces any jail or prison time. Greenwood said he would be asking for some time in custody. Schroeder lived in Pacific Beach until recently, when he moved to Santee.
