Sunset View Elementary catches 'Go Green' fever

Sunset View Elementary School formally kicked off its “Go Green” program on Friday to promote environmental awareness and to implement the sharing of ideas across the campuses of the Point Loma Cluster Schools and the community.
School officials have been reading environmentally-themed books to students to help them learn about the environment and what role residents hold.
Children at Sunset View will begin practicing the 3 Rs: reducing, reusing and recycling in several different ways.
Some items are already recycled at the school, such as paper. Under the “Go Green” program, students and staff will add cardboard and aluminum foil to the paper recycling. Black recycle bins will also be used to collect plastic drink bottles and cans around the school campus.
Students will also help by composting fruit and vegetable remains from lunches, and student helpers will take the compostable food wastes to the garden and placed in the compost bin.
Future endeavors include an informative website and zero-waste lunch days.
During Friday’s kickoff event, students, parents and staff wore green to show support for environmentally sound programs and sung a song by environmental activist and songwriter Jack Johnson.
The school’s programs will be student-based and supported with education. Emphasis will be placed on the interrelationship with the environment and the shared responsibility in protecting the environment as part of citizenship.
